Imagine a time when a phone was a luxury, a missed call was a secret code, and an SMS felt like lightning-fast communication. MTN Nigeria is bringing those days back to life with an immersive walk down memory lane, marking a quarter-century of linking the nation.
The telecom giant has flung open the doors to the Y’ello Street Experience, a hands-on exhibition at MTN Plaza on Awolowo Road in Ikoyi, Lagos, running from August 10 to 17, 2026. This isn’t just a display of old gadgets; it’s a living, breathing timeline of how Nigerians have talked, worked, and thrived over the past 25 years.
Visitors wander through distinct eras, from the clunky handsets and crackling voice calls of the early days to today’s sleek smartphones and always-on mobile internet. Interactive setups and familiar scenes trigger a flood of memories, showing how a simple tool for talking morphed into the backbone of daily life—powering everything from banking to social media.
For many, the journey is deeply personal. Kunle Rasheed, a content creator, found himself swept up in the nostalgia. “Walking through brought back so much,” he said. “I remember when owning a phone was a huge status symbol. Now, it’s the remote control for our entire lives. Seeing how far we’ve come is remarkable.”
Visual artist Obinna Chieze saw the bigger picture. “What struck me most was how connectivity reshaped everything,” he noted. “We went from basic calls and texts to mobile banking and digital services. It’s a vivid reminder of how technology is now woven into our very existence.”
But the experience isn’t just about looking back. It shines a light on how connectivity has strengthened relationships, boosted small businesses, and opened doors to information for millions. It also poses a forward-looking question: what will the next 25 years of digital innovation bring to Nigeria?
The exhibition is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until August 17, 2026, at MTN Plaza, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. Those eager to step back in time—or glimpse the future—can register at mtnyellostreet.com.
